Yoga literally means the union of the soul with the Eternal truth, which is our natural innermost state of being. The word yoga has its root is the Sanscrit word ” yuj” which means to join or unite.
Yoga can be seen as:
1. external: corresponds to the physical realm of existence
2. internal: corresponds to the mental
3. innermost: corresponds to the spiritual
The study and practice of yoga sharpens the power of discernment and points to the understanding of the true nature of our being. This cannot be understood by the senses and intellect only. The study and practice of yoga enables us to realize the pure state of consciousness, it uncovers naturally the innermost true Self. It is a practical study of how the body and the mind function, influencing the intellect, allowing the natural freedom to shine through.
Yoga enhances the quality of living. It teaches us to strive for worthy goals, cultivate concentration, contentment, shows us how to let go of that which is not essential, cultivate good habits, and live a life of highest integrity, living joyously, openly and recognizing the One in all, and all in One. Because Yoga is interested in both the way to discovery of the soul and the union with it. To practice yoga is thus to unite the body with the mind, and ultimately, it is to unite the body, mind and consciousness with the depth of the soul.
Most of us suffer in some way, some physically, others mentally or spiritually. Yoga practice develops the body, mind and satisfies us spiritually. It is difficult to experience our natural state of wholeness and inter-connectedness when we feel separation from our Self, each other and nature. Yoga is a practical method to bring peace and sense of connectedness back to our lives.
The state of our nervous system dictates how we experience the world around us. When we are rested, eat consciously, keep the mind clear and open, body flexible and healthy, we feel awake, alive and happy.
Yoga in the West is often seen as physical discipline only. Yoga is also psycho physiological and psycho-spiritual discipline.
